Last chance to register for international empathy conference
There are only days left to register for an international conference focussed on the promotion of life-changing empathic healthcare for patients and NHS staff.
Some of the world’s greatest champions of treating patients with empathy will share their expertise with healthcare professionals, researchers and educators at this year’s Global Empathy in Healthcare Network symposium in Leicester.
Featuring plenary sessions with award-winning speakers, masterclasses, workshops and debates, attendees will learn how compassionate, patient-centred care can be fostered in an increasingly digital world.
Attendees have until Friday, August 15, to secure their place at the two-day event which will take place on Monday, September 15, and Tuesday, September 16.
Professor Jeremy Howick, director of the Stoneygate Centre for Empathic Healthcare at the University of Leicester, and co-founder, with Catherine Eyres, of the Global Empathy in Healthcare Network, said:
“From our experience we’ve seen that empathic healthcare cuts practitioner burnout by 50 per cent and increases patient satisfaction and experience of the NHS.
“There is evidence to show that it also reduces post-operative pain in patients by 34 per cent, lowers mortality in people living with diabetes by 40 per cent, improves the extent to which patients use medications optimally by 19 per cent and lowers chronic pain by 10 per cent.
“Adding empathy to health consultations is cost-effective and so important to the outcomes for both patients and healthcare practitioners.
“This symposium should not be missed by healthcare professionals, researchers and educators because it will provide an amazing opportunity to learn about this important field from the very best empathic healthcare experts from around the world.”
The conference’s award-winning plenary speakers will include CBS News’ Chief Medical Correspondent Jonathan LaPook who is Professor of Medicine at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, an internist and gastroenterologist at NYU Langone Health, and the Founder and President of the NYU Langone Empathy Project.
Leading experts from around the world will also deliver a series of insightful masterclasses and there will be a debate entitled ‘AI care- and chat-bots cannot provide empathic care’.
The event will also feature a session led by performing arts charity Turtle Key Arts. Its projects support a wide range of groups, including autistic children and young people, young people living with HIV, children with dyslexia and people living with dementia.
The Global Empathy in Healthcare Network Symposium is being delivered in association with the International Association for Communication in Healthcare (EACH).
